NEWS UPDATE: 11th March 2003
Over the winter a great deal has happened at Sibsey Trader Windmill.
Firstly, the new millwrights have been working on the ongoing centring problems and have now got the cap turning freely to the wind. They have also carried out a programme of checking and rectification of various minor problems. The mill is now working better.
During the millwrights work another sail was found to be suspect. After testing and careful examination this sail had to be removed together with its’ opposite in order to balance the mill when the sails are turning. The mill is now working on four sails until the new one is complete.
Our winter project has been getting the first set of grey stones working again. This has proved quite difficult, as they have not been used for fifty years. Among other things we have had to replace the supporting timbers, raise the bed stone to sit 1" higher, manufacture new stone ‘furniture’ and re-pack the bridge tree. We are getting close now, although some jobs are proving very time consuming.
Hopefully we should be grinding using our ‘French’ stones – which grind the grain in such a way as it can be ‘dressed’ to obtain white flour, as well as with the ‘Grey’ stones – which produce whole meal flour.
Second, the kitchen has been re-wired so that we can fit a new kitchen more suited to our catering needs. At the same time the electric meter has been moved to a new ‘house’ as the old one leaked, which kept causing the main trip to blow.
We are now redecorating the tea-room and cleaning the mill in preparation for the new season which begins on April 1st.
In the new season we are to open Every Tuesday, Saturday and Bank Holiday from 10.00am – 6.00pm, Sundays from 11.00am – 6.00pm. We are available for group and school visits at other times by arrangement.
The tea room has just been awarded a gold citation after nomination by visitors in a competition organised by ‘Lincolnshire Life’ magazine. This is a great boost to our confidence as we have only been at the mill for two seasons – the first of which only lasted a few months due to closure for unexpected essential repairs.
We exhibited our stoneground flour at the national ‘Caterex’ exhibition held in Skegness in conjunction with the ‘Tastes of Lincolnshire’ promotion. This has lead to some useful contacts. We plan to exhibit at the ‘Lincolnshire Show’ later this year.
